If you haven’t tried rock climbing! Make your way to the gym now. It’s a perfect combination of working out, adventure, and fun! I love the fact that every time I go to the climbing gym, I’m doing something that I actually really enjoy, but I’m also getting a crazy good work-out in at the same time. Did you know that you can burn anywhere from 400-900 calories per hour when climbing?

For people in Utah, there are two gyms that are the most common- Momentum Climbing Gym and The Front Climbing Club. Both gyms provide multiple locations throughout Utah, offer other gym amenities, and offer classes to help members improve their skills. While they do contain a lot of similarities, they’re also quite a bit different. If you’re looking to get a membership to either of these climbing gyms- then you’re in luck. I’ve gone ahead and made the decision process a little bit easier on you by creating a list of the Pro’s and Con’s of each gym.
Let’s start with Momentum Climbing Gym
PROS
- Kid Friendly: Momentum welcomes kids of all ages into their facilities! The Sandy location has a child-care open during certain hours of the day, but if it’s not open, then no worries! The floorplans are super open which make it easy for parents to find a spot to let their kids play while they climb. Parents are able to keep a close eye on their kids. They also offer a variety of kids’ classes and Summer camps.
- Locations are spread out about 20 minutes from each other: I love being able to switch up which gym my husband and I climb at. Routes are switched out every so often, but with multiple gyms to go to, I feel like we are always able to find something new to dive into. The walls at the Sandy and Millcreek locations are very different from each other too, which is great!
CONS
- The Lehi location is only a bouldering gym: For those that aren’t as into bouldering as they are top rope or lead climbing, it’s kind of a bummer that the Lehi location only offers bouldering routes, especially if that’s the gym location closest to your home.
Now onto The Front Climbing Club
PROS
- Dog Friendly: If you are a pet lover, this is the place for you. The Front might not have a daycare for you to drop your child off at, but they do have a doggy daycare!
- Ping Pong Table: The Salt Lake location has a few ping-pong tables for members to spend time on. I love how they’ve made the gym a place to hang-out and not just work-out.
- Café: The Salt Lake location also contains a café which is extremely nice for when you need a bite before or after your climb.
CONS
- The locations aren’t evenly created: The Salt Lake location is much larger and nicer than the Ogden location which is unfair to the members that live closer to the Ogden location. Of course, members can always make the drive down to Salt Lake, but who wants to drive 40 minutes?
- Wooden walls: The look is modern and cool, but it makes it slick. I prefer when the walls have more traction and grip.
- Parking: The Salt Lake location is ginormous and popular; however, there isn’t a whole lot of parking. You typically have to park down the street and around the corner.
