If you’re looking for a new hobby to take up, silversmithing just might be it. The Gem Studio is a fun, little shop in Utah that offers workshops where they teach people how to make amazing jewelry from scratch! Here’s my experience and what to expect.
I heard about The Gem Studio from a couple of friends when I was working retail. I absolutely loved the idea behind the company. I had been wanting to try out The Gem Studio for quite some time and this year my husband and I were finally able to schedule a workshop. We booked our class online and went the next day. Evenings on the weekends are typically pretty popular; therefore, they fill up fast. If you’re wanting to go on the weekend, I would recommend scheduling your workshop time a week, or at least a few days, in advance. They now have two locations, one in Orem and the other in Salt Lake. We live closer to Salt Lake, so we went to the location in City Creek. At the front of the studio, they have a table with a variety of different gems to choose from- so many that it was hard to make a decision! They are all so beautiful and unique from one another. I went ahead and choose a clear gem. My husband doesn’t like to wear big bulky rings, but he still wanted to share this experience with me. For those that aren’t big on wearing rings but are still interested in making a ring at a much more affordable price, you can create just the band, which is what my husband opted to do. He had fun stamping his ring and shaping it.
One of the workers was there to help us through every step of the ring making process. I was able to pick every design aspect of my ring which I loved. I first started by fitting metal around my gem and then I sized my band. After I was able to fire the band and the metal frame (where the gem would go) together. We only did the condensed workshop, which is an hour and a half, but for those that want to make their ring from scratch they offer a 3-hour workshop that is more in-depth. Both classes are the same price, so I would recommend taking the longer class if you are interested in learning more about silversmithing.
I loved our experience at The Gem Studio. The employees were all very genuine and willing to help out when needed. It was fun being able to try something completely new. After the workshop, I had a beautiful ring that I had created- which is so special!
